The 8×8 is unique as it doubles an electrical device mount. It has holes to mount an octagonal junction box for use with wired smoke detectors, wireless access points, or possibly even lighting fixtures. When using a smoke detector we highly recommend keeping the cover off to avoid interfering with its effectiveness.
